Arugam Bay Beach

You’ll find Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka’s Ampara District on the southeast coast, 715 kilometres from Colombo. The bay itself has a wide sandy beach and a coral reef ripe for snorkelling – expect plenty of gem-bright tropical fish. It’s also a great spot for diving, birdwatching and wildlife-spotting: if you’re lucky, you might spy elephants strolling across the A4 main road, through the Lahugala elephant corridor. Nearby attractions include the Muhudu Maha Viharaya Buddhist temple, Pottuvil Point beach, Crocodile Rock (keep your eyes peeled for elephants and eagles circling overhead) and the Okanda Kudumbigala Forest Hermitage: a small, ancient shrine dedicated to the God of Kataragama – Skanda.
