Step back in time at historic Goatfell hotel, set on a working tea estate high in the hills near Nuwara Eliya, AKA ‘Little England’. (The region was a big hit with colonial-era tea-planters from Scotland and England, dontcha know.) This boutique bungalow was once home to the tea estate’s superintendent, so you can soak up quintessential Sri Lankan tea-country life with added creature comforts – obliging butler service, for starters. There are four cosy bedrooms, a shimmering, view-toting swimming pool – unheated, mind – and a snug library with a crackling fire. (It gets chilly in these parts, so come armed with cashmere knits and chunky socks.) The refined furniture and furnishings take inspiration from England, and classic Western options are offered alongside the chef’s excellent Sri Lankan cuisine. Make yourselves at home (it helps that rates are all inclusive, meaning all the more reason to over-indulge).
