Pigeon Island National Park
Sri Lanka has two marine national parks: Pigeon Island is one of them. Set one kilometre off the coast of Nilaveli, in the Eastern Province, the park spans just over 470 hectares. Taking its name from the rock pigeons that have colonised it, Pigeon Island is famous for its coral reefs, as well as its diverse wildlife. Myriad fishes can be spotted darting among the corals, alongside occasional blacktip reef sharks and ponderous sea turtles.
