Sigiriya

Locals call Sigiriya the Eighth Wonder of the World – and you’ll understand why when you clap eyes on it. This ancient palace and fortress complex is set on a breathtaking rock plateau formed by volcanic magma, towering 200 meters above the surrounding jungles and 370 meters above sea level. Within the fortress complex, visitors can discover the remnants of a ruined palace, encircled by an elaborate network of fortifications, gardens, canals, ponds, alleys and fountains. Previously home to King Kasyapa, the fortress also has 18 gawp-worthy frescoes, depicting nude ladies – believed to be the lucky Kasyapa’s wives and concubines, or priestesses performing religious rituals.
