Colombo shopping is becoming very interesting with noteworthy boutiques starting to emerge. I make a beeline for PR, which is a beautiful concept shop showcasing wonderful Sri Lankan and Indian designers. I like to go to Rithihi to be inspired by handloom textiles and saris; the Barefoot store, café and gallery is a must-visit experience (I spend ages in their bookshop). There is also the newly opened Urban Island store, which I’m looking forward to exploring on my next visit.
There’s no end of choice for food in Colombo. I like to have a great juice and salad at Café Kumbuk for lunch and sit and do a bit of work. There’s always a very international crowd there and a good buzz – maybe go for a yoga class next door at Prana Lounge. For dinner, the Gallery Café is such an elegant treat.
I always visit galleries – the Colombo art scene is flourishing. If you pick up a copy of Artra Magazine, which covers the local art scene, you can find out what openings and shows are on. My favourite is the Saskia Fernando Gallery: Saskia has wonderful contemporary artists.
Definitely have an ayurvedic massage, too – Spa Ceylon has good choices!
