‘Muslims make up to around 10 per cent of the population in Sri Lanka: they have been in Sri Lanka for centuries, since Arab traders moved to the island. A traveller will witness a number of Muslim influences around the island, especially the beautiful mosques. Muslims in Sri Lanka have a unique cuisine influenced by traditional Sri Lankan cooking, which uses several Sri Lankan spices. Sri Lankans’ favourite Muslim dish is biriyani – everyone here loves it. On A Taste of the East, take part in a biriyani cooking class hosted at a Muslim home and learn to make this complex yet delicious dish. Sit down with the host for lunch after the cooking class to share stories from their interesting family history.’
